Breakfast essential: Margarine

by - January 08, 2017

Remember when you were a kid and your mom would make you breakfast? She’ll bring out that tub of margarine and spread it on some hot toasted bread and the morning isn’t so bad anymore and seems so much better? :)

We always thought that it was just that yummy thing to have on our bread or rice, but margarine actually is a nutritious and delicious product that is good for the kids and family.

That dollop of margarine that Mom used to put on our meals contains a lot of vitamins and minerals that are needed while our kids are growing up. It has vitamins B6, B9, and B12; vitamin D; and iodine for brain growth and development. For our energetic kids, they will gain B vitamins that will help with the absorption of nutrients from the food they eat, as well as vitamin D3, which is essential for muscle function.

My two boys are butter lovers, but slowly trying to give them a better option, because sometimes it can be difficult to use as a spread, especially when it just came from the refrigerator. As a spread, margarine is soft and easy to spread and a much healthier choice than butter, which contains saturated fat and can increase heart disease.  Margarine is made from vegetable oil and has higher levels of healthy unsaturated fats.

Choose a product with the least amount of saturated fat and zero trans fat. It always helps to check the label and have moderate intakes. Aside from the vitamins and minerals, there are more benefits that your kids can gain from margarine, like lowers cholesterol, lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, and lowers your fat intake.

But margarine isn’t just a spread for bread or ulam for your rice. It can also be used as an added flavor to meals that you cook. You can sauté vegetables, fry, roast and grill with it. You are also not limited with the classic flavor, because now your picky little ones can choose from a variety of flavors from Star Margarine, the leading fortified margarine brand in the market that we all grew up with – Star Chocolate, Star Vanilla, and Star Caramel. There are so many possibilities and choices that you can have with margarine. :)
