ARTSY FARTSY AVA: typhoon

In the Philippines, adverse weather conditions cause millions worth of damage annually. On a global scale, economic losses caused by extreme weather increased to nearly $200 billion a year. With 10-20 typhoons hitting the country every year, Filipinos are left with property loss and death tolls of staggering alarm.

Roughly 1,000 to 2,000 Filipinos die every year due to weather phenomena. Just like last year when typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful typhoon ever recorded hit land. Even livelihoods earnestly grown for decades were disrupted, wiped out in a single storm.
Our being prone to national disasters has always been a standard, with our poorest being the most susceptible. Although we have competent weather technology systems, readiness is far from being created due to the fact that weather terminologies are too technical for the average Filipino. Casualties of Typhoon Haiyan reached as many as 10,000 people last year largely because of this.
Last November 25, I was fortunate to be invited by the Aboitiz Group to learn more about our weather and how we should put it as a normal part of our lives and be prepared for it. :)

Today we didn’t have any classes and instead of bumming at home I placed my time into good use by inviting my friends Kimmie and Drea to volunteer at CSB for the relief drive and donations. They were really excited to help out which really make's me fortunate I have such good friends who not only looks after their cause, but for others as well. Also a big thanks to my blog friend who bought from KNICK KNAXX, because we started putting a good purpose for our business and made a BUY FOR A CAUSE for the ONDOY victims. Meaning all proceeds will be donated to the victims and Marian, you were our first buyer for that update, so THANK YOU SO MUCH for supporting our cause!:) Because of her and Drei we were able to buy a bit more groceries for the Ondoy victims, like toiletries, canned goods, milk, rice and noodles. Drea, Kimmie and I helped too in segregating the goods by counting them for inventory and packing a little. :) Happy helpers, we are!

It was a really good feeling I tell you. I love helping and it was truly a great experience. It's true what some people said in my Twitter account that, It's enough to just sit around and Tweet about it. We should actually DO SOMETHING and when I did that today, it was absolutely rewarding to know that even just a little of your time could make a difference because you'll really feel the unity of all Filipinos. I'm glad I went to the relief drive today. It was a blessing to be there. :)

Today could have been one of the best days of my life—attending the candy fair, seeing who bags the Best blog category, a candy cutie or two and seeing all the wonderful booths. But no. Ondoy decided to crash in our country today and made everyone miserable. Although I am somewhat glad that I stayed home instead of forcing myself to go to school at 8AM today, but I feel sad for everyone who got stranded on their way home and for the students that have to sleep in school, because it would be dangerous for them to tackle the rain. Every place is flooded including our garage. The containers we have our floating as if it were Titanic. It’s sad. :( Right now the rain has stopped. I just hope it continues to be that way.

Is Ondoy because of our carelessness towards the environment? Could it be global warming? I guess it's about time that we step up and take care of what we have left before it's all gone. Let's appreciate and make things work for the better. We all don't want another Ondoy to come our way.
