Mother's Day DIY Gift Idea: Baking Soda Clay Handprint.♥

by - May 03, 2021

As we all know, Mother's Day is just around the corner and it's that one occasion where we make our moms feel extra, extra, extra special and loved because of all the unconditional things they do for us. I know there are so many gift suggestions out there, but if you have little kids and want to make something more personal for their grandparents or just a cute activity you wanna bond over Mother's Day (since we all can't celebrate outside yet), you can try this fun DIY gift idea!  ^_^

I grew up spending most of my Mother's Day with my own Mom whenever I go to Taiwan for my summer vacations. But ever since I had my own family, that became a rare thing already and usually we would greet each other via FaceTime calls. During our calls, she would often mention how her grandkids are growing up so much before her eyes and given COVID-19 being around, she hasn't seen them in person for almost two years. :( That's the downside of it, so for any occasion that we celebrate, like birthdays, I always ask the kids to make something for their Momsie a.k.a. grandma to somehow bridge the distance and make us feel closer.

For this year's Mother's Day, we thought of making things a bit more different. Instead of our typical DIY card, why not a Keepsake craft? Since kids grow up so fast, we decided to work on a Baking Soda Clay Handprint! This way we can keep Asher's hand size in a mold and have him 8 years old forever through that. :)

If you also find this interesting, here are the materials you'll need....

2 Cups ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda
♥ 1 cup cornstarch
♥ 1 1/4 cups water
♥ food coloring
♥ glitter *optional*
♥ Measuring cups

If you saw my past post about our Rainbow Baking Soda Science Experiment, you would know that I'm quite fond of using Arm & Hammer's Baking Soda for more than just cooking or cleaning. It actually has so many uses! Now, I discovered you can even make clay out of it. 😳

Follow these easy steps to make your very own clay...

Step 1: Pour 2 cups of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and 1 cup of cornstarch in your saucepan and just stir together until mixed well

Step 2: Add 1 1/4 cups of cold water while continuously mixing

Step 3: Add your chosen food coloring color and mix well

Step 4: Cook over medium heat and stir continuously until you get the consistency of mashed potatoes

Step 5: Take out of saucepan, put on a plate, cover with damp cloth and let it cool

Once your clay has cooled, you can now start molding it to any shape you like! But might I suggest when picking a food color, use any color other than yellow. LOL.😂 We used yellow, so it looks like an actual mashed potato hahaha! Maybe next time we'll do violet or blue.

For this craft, we molded it the best way we can with our hands into a heart shaped and added a bit of blue glitter to make it 'sparkly' but you can also opt to paint your mold if you prefer. :) After the shaping, we pushed Asher's right hand firmly into the mold's center and then we decorated it more with glitter!

This is our final output! We also added his name on the upper left corner and then we allowed it to air dry, so the mold will harden. :)

This is our Clay handprint two days after! With this keepsake craft, you have the perfect personalized gift that will surely make your loved one feel extra special.

Don't forget to greet your Mommas this coming May 9! Advance Happy Mother's Day!!!
